Bio

Holly Magdalene Scott

Holly Magdalene Scott is a Northumbrian Artist living and working in the Durham Dales.
She has been drawing for as long as she can remember. Raised on a farm in Northumberland, she enjoys rural landscapes and the fascinating array of wildlife within them, which is still a constant source of inspiration. There, she had the freedom to roam and observe the changes of season and rhythms of nature- a joy she now finds in the outstanding beauty of the North Pennines.
Holly’s love of birds, insects and animals- borne from a strong connection to the landscape- shines through in her artwork. Inspired by her Grandparents’  natural history books in her childhood, Holly would set out to find creatures in the landscape.
Her creative process remains much the same today-she can often be encountered wandering with camera in hand and a rucksack full of natural history books- waiting for an encounter to spark an idea. These experiences in the landscape inform her intricately detailed ink drawings which are in equal measures delicately beautiful and scientifically accurate.
Holly trained in fine art, but has since worked to develop traditional craft-based skills. She started Things of Wonder as a banner under which to create freely, identifying herself as between an artist/illustrator and a designer/maker. Holly seeks to make art which people can relate to and which enables her to support herself as a practicing, developing artist.
Through Things of Wonder, Holly is able to defy categorization, working with lino-printing, embroidery and appliqué, alongside her original ink illustrations and acrylic paintings.  She creates  lino cut prints, hand-bound leather journals and handmade cards , incorporating wool and tweed fabrics and fair-trade papers.
